How to truly listen
Listening, real listening is a skill, we fail to master.
We might think it’s just a passive act but it is so much more than that.
Plus it is not only limited to our ears. Listening go far beyond just acknowledging sounds.
Listening is an art we all need to improve and better to make our lives more complete.
How do you feel when you are truly being listened to ? You know it. You feel it. It is not something so easily faked.
In order to truly listen we need real empathy. If you don’t have it.
Something in your eyes and/or your body language will give you away.
We are social animals. Millions of years of conditioning has made us very acute to reading body language even when it is really subtle.
We might not be aware of it. We might not necessarily be good at it. However we all have the fundamentals hardwired.
It’s part of the package deal you get when you are born as a human.
To listen we need to shut down one thing. Which is not necessarily something that is so easily shut.
That thing is the constant chatter in our minds. This echo that prevents us from listening.
As I said above it is truly amazing when someone is giving us their rapt attention.
When someone is really attracted to you. Their attention is on you and on you only.
That attention given by this person is so obvious and can be seen from miles away.
I am not saying we need to be attracted to everybody in order to truly listen but we need to make ourselves interested (at least a little) in that person.
Listening needs presence. When you are present you can listen with your ears. You can listen with your eyes. You can listen with your nose. You can listen with your whole mind.
When someone is asking for your help and counsel that’s when you need to step up your game.
(Real) Listening alone will give much more insight into your friend’s problem. You don’t need to analyse or even think about what this person is saying.
Just listen and observe. It will come a time when it is your turn to speak and retort. When that time comes.
Trust your mind to give you the right words for this person.
Oftentimes you might be quite shock with what you said or are saying.
You might be quite impressed and might not even understand where this came from.
Do not underestimate the power of your mind. If you don’t let anything stand in its way.
It will give you the right words at the right time.
That’s just listening to others. You need to also listen to yourself.
You need to listen to your body. You need to listen to your mind.
How many of us are deaf to our own self. How many of us neglect ourselves till it is too late.
Your body is telling you it’s tired. Your mind is telling you to take it easy. Why won’t you listen ?
Many physical and mental ailments can be prevented if we would just listen more.
When you are with a loved one who is in pain. You try your best to give this person your time, your empathy, your kindness and your ears.
Now I want you guys to do it for yourselves as well. Please listen to your body when it’s getting tired.
Please do not forsake it.
Whatever it’s telling you. Do not judge. Do not analyse.
Have kindness and whatever your mind and body tells you. Accept it and indulge with compassion.
I think that’s what Tolstoy meant in his story of the 3 most important thing.
What is the most important time ?
What is the most important person ?
What is the most important thing to do ?
The most important time is now.
The most important person is the person you are with.
The most important thing to do is care.
We spent most of our lives with ourselves so that is the person we need to care for most of the time... Scroll down for more.
