Be the best you can be and you will a good son/daughter

This is not an invitation to rebel against your parents. A mother and a father have one of the most difficult task in the world, raising good sons and daughters.

As sons and daughters we should be forever grateful to have parents who take care of us and offer a love like no one else can.

We are forever in debt to our parents. That being said, mothers and fathers should not try to live vicariously through their kids. Parents should not choose a definitive direction for their kids, because they think this is the better path for them.

The way to hell is paved with good intentions. I have only been on the receiving end of this. I am not a parent yet. I can’t claim to fully understand the way a parent feels towards its offspring. I can only try.

However I know what it is like to be a disappointment for one’s parents. Any daughter or son can relate to this.

Looking into your mother or father eyes and seeing the disappointment is nothing short of excruciating regardless of how old you are.

As sons and daughters we really try our best but sometimes we fall short. The most important thing is following one’s heart. Unfortunately what your heart wants might differ from what your parents have envisioned for you.

I remember this scene from the movie 3 idiots. Farhan wants to be a wildlife photographer but his father is hell-bent on making his son an engineer.

Farhan is terrified at the prospect of confronting his father. Eventually he does, his father tells him, that if he becomes a wildlife photographer, then in a few years he will have less than all his former classmates and end up hating himself.

Farhan answers by saying that if he becomes an engineer, he will be unhappy and end up hating him.

I don’t want to spoil more of the movie but don’t worry guys it ends well for the both of them.

How many relationships are broken or fractured because of a lack of communication and understanding.

I just want to tell parents, we love you, expecting more from you is selfish but as your kids we have our own path and hopefully we can walk it together.

Look into your son or daughter’s eyes and recognise in them some of the fear they have of disappointing you and at the same time see the true desires they have for they own life.

Please understand that we want to be good sons and daughters, in our own way and the last thing we want, is to disappoint you.

Sons and daughters be patient with your parents. Never, ever forget to be grateful towards them, even if you feel misunderstood. Follow your heart even if it means being in a conflict with them. Eventually they will understand and love you no matter what.
